Dining Room Table Leaf

A "Functional Leaf" is a cost savings alternative:
$380 1st Copy / $285 2nd Copy.

The assumption is that you will always use a tablecloth when using the leaf. The  functional leaf is made 20"-22" wide of ¾” MDF thickened to match. It has no skirt, no finish, but has the general shape of the table edge duplicated for similar fabric draping. It is fitted with “table leaf fingers” for final fitting by the client at the home. We only need an existing leaf to copy the edge profile and leaf-pin hole locations.

Table Leaf/Skirt To Match Best Practical:

Making a new table leaf to match an existing table can be done, but the requirements are very wide ranging and include: wood specie, grain pattern, lumber versus veneer, inlay or cross banding, finish age darkness and stain/toner, gloss, etc.

How Made:

  • New lumber leaves to match are normally about 10"-12" wide each. A place setting is two such leaves. We do not make wider lumber leaves due to warpage risks.
  • A lumber leaf will usually run the total width with no cross banding at the ends.
  • A crucial issue is whether the existing table is also being refinished, since that makes all the finishing aspects easier to solve.
  • A veneered leaf always has a lumber cross banding on the end, and may have veneer cross-banding inlay on the top of the end. It would be made using a plywood substrate and vacuum bag veneering to achieve the veneer goal. Exact grain match cannot be guaranteed. A veneered leaf is normally 20"-22" wide, so twice the width for similar costs.

Skirts:

  • A new leaf may or may not also have a requirement for skirts to match. The skirt should be carefully considered since if not flat with a routed bottom edge or molded bottom edge, it may have a large contour that we cannot effectively copy.
  • Skirts would run $180 to $300 per leaf in addition to the cost for the leaf.

Cost of Table Leaf "Blanks": Without addressing the finishing or fitting aspects.

  • A lumber leaf to match runs $540 to $840 for the 1st leaf for 10-12" wide each.
  • A veneer leaf with lumber cross band at end and no top inlay run the same, plus possible requirement to special order veneer, however the table leaf is normally 20"-22" wide so twice as much for same price.
  • A veneer leaf with top cross band inlay adds $120-$180 or runs $600 to $900, however the table leaf is normally 20"-22" wide so twice as much for same price.
  • Additional leaves at same time at 60%-75% of 1st leaf cost.
Finishing:
  • IF the table is being refinished, add $180-$240 to achieve color matching between old and new wood.
  • IF the table is not being refinished and the leaf needs to be finished best practical within a reasonable range, the finishing cost runs $300-$420. IF table itself is not being refinished we simply cannot guarantee a finish to match.

Fitting:

  • A leaf made to match should be fitted to the table in the shop.
  • The table top or an existing leaf must be here during fabrication.
  • The table top itself must be here for final fitting before finishing. Pickup or Delivery of the table should be added.
  • We can supply the new leaf blanks unfitted without having the table top at the shop and they should fit at the home, but we can not guarantee the fit.
