WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW:

General guidelines are that any carton with a girth (distance around carton) and its length can be up to 165”. However, any package over 130" occurs a Large Package Fee of $45, so the goal is to stay smaller if possible. Therefore, a 24x24x34” carton would be 24+24+24+24+34 or 130”. A 22x22x42" carton is also 130". Those sizes should hold most typical dining chairs, when also allowing for adequate packing protection. Chair arms and rocker runners may cause problems! See Special Note at end about shipping chairs.

Step 1: Email to sales@thewoodworksinc.com digital pictures of your item/s and describe what needs to be done. Provide approximate sizes. Provide your residential delivery address and relevant phone numbers. Reveiw the Chair Caning Pricing for pricing guidelines.

Step 2: We will respond giving you more accurate price guidance based on what we know about your needs. The final price may vary, after we see the actual item.. It is rare! We will be in touch with you before performing any work

Step 3: Use our emailed shipping instructions and shipping label, which will include your Authorization to Ship number.

Step 4: Take your item to any pack-and-ship service in your locale with our shipping instructions. Packing service fees vary by each locale and store.

  • PACKING SERVICES
    • A loose chair seat about $10/15
    • A full chair about $35/40

Step 5: Arrange shipping of your carton with our Authorization to Ship number on its outside. Our example uses UPS GROUND assumptions. The shipping rate charge is based on weight of the item including its padding materials, the carton size, and the origin-to-destination geographic zones away from the Kansas City area; where we are in a suburb zip code 66202.

A small carton containing heavy contents like a cabinet door or removable chair seat will ship for its Actual Weight of maybe 10-15 pounds..
A larger carton containing full chair has a lot of air but consumes space and will ship for what is called Dimensional Weight. It is complicated. The following assumes Dimensional Weight.

  • SHIPPING SERVICES
    • A 20x20x up to 48" carton will likely ship for about $35.
    • A 22x22x up to 40" carton will likely ship for about $45.
    • A 24x24x up to 32" carton will likely ship for about $55.
    • Each of the above examples total 128" of girth and length.
    • Any carton exceeding 130" of girth and length will cost an additional $45 for a Large Package surcharge.

The following map, that one pack-and-ship service uses, shows zones indicating number of business days for ground delivery. The charges for the distance for the shipment varies relatively slightly.

Step 6: Your shipment's receipt by us will be acknowledged by email. Your final price will be confirmed in that email. If it is different in any way from what was previously indicated, you have full decision regarding whether to proceed. You can do so by return email, if applicable.

Step 7: You can pay by personal check that shows your home address; or call our offices with your credit card information.  IF you decide to not proceed, WE WILL PAY RETURN SHIPPING, if you had an Authorization to Ship . Alaska and Hawaii are not included.

Step 8: Your item will be repaired within 30 days and prepared for return shipment. We must be able to reuse your original carton and packing materials. We will notify you by email the day it is to be shipped. WE WILL PAY RETURN SHIPPING! We assume return shipping back to your original pack-and-ship service firm, so be sure they will accept it for you. We also assume your original carton is fully reusable.

SPECIAL NOTE ABOUT SHIPPING CHAIRS:

The important dimensions regarding a chair are to place it flush back against a wall. Measure

W = the width of the seat or arms at its widest = W,
D = measure its maximum depth from front of seat or front of legs (which ever is more) at floor all the way to a wall = D, and
H = measure its overall height = H.
The final carton size must also allow for adequate protective padding.

Most chairs will have a maximum W or D of less than 24". Our experience is most are 20-22" at their widest W or D. That means that a carton of 24" x 24" square up to 34" tall will usually ship your chair. To the degree that you can stack another chair upside down on the other “spoon style” and still be less than 24" it is possible to ship two chairs in the same carton with adequate protection between the chairs.

It is important to stress to the packing service to control the carton they create to stay below the Large Package Fee size of 130" of girth plus length, if at all possible.

Most packing services will stock cartons 20" or 22" or 24" square. Your chair must still be wrapped with bubble wrap so add a few inches of width and height for packing.

The overall height, of course, will always be taller than 24". Most packing services do not stock 24x24 cartons taller than 24" also. That means they will telescope another carton of maybe 12 to 24" down over the base one to create the taller carton. Of course, they then charge you for two cartons.

Taller cartons may be available when described as dish packs, short wardrobes, but be sure your retain the square-ness needed.

Sheet bubble pack is the best packing to use for protection of the chair/s. If shipping peanuts are used the chair must first be placed in a plastic bag.
